After the education industry has undergone in-depth adjustments, the functional positioning of education and training institutions is transforming from a mere "place for knowledge transmission" to a "space for comprehensive quality development". This transformation is not only reflected in the iteration of curriculum content, but also more profoundly in the reconstruction of physical space. An excellent interior renovation design for an education and training institution should become a concrete expression of teaching philosophy, making the space itself a "silent teacher".
Colors and Materials: The Invisible Language of Teaching
The color system of education and training spaces should be based on developmental psychology. it is advisable to use 40% warm tones with high lightness (such as light yellow and pale orange), combined with 30% neutral colors (off-white and light gray). This combination stimulates sensory development while avoiding over-excitement. For primary school spaces, 20% more green elements can be added. Studies have shown that green can extend children's attention span by 15%. For middle school spaces, 50% cool tones with low saturation (like light blue and grayish green) are suitable, which help create a focused atmosphere.
The choice of materials is not only about safety but also an important part of tactile education. The floor materials can adopt a "three-zone division": solid wood composite flooring for teaching areas (with low thermal conductivity, making it more comfortable in winter), rubber flooring for activity areas (with good resilience to reduce the risk of falls), and homogeneous and permeable PVC for corridors (with a wear resistance rating of Class T, suitable for high-frequency use). In addition to environmental protection, wall treatments should also consider "participability" — setting up cork boards or magnetic coatings at appropriate heights, allowing the space to become a dynamically growing "learning canvas".
Safety Design: A Game of Details Beyond the Baseline
The safety standards for education and training institutions should be higher than those for ordinary commercial spaces. The electrical system must adopt a "dual-loop design" to ensure that emergency lighting can continue to supply power for more than 90 minutes in case of a power outage; all sockets need to be equipped with child protection doors and installed at a height of no less than 1.8 meters; in addition to conventional smoke detectors, the fire protection system should also be equipped with temperature-sensing devices in children's areas to avoid scaring children with smoke alarms.
Invisible safety details show more sophistication. The washbasins in restrooms should be designed in height-based tiers (three levels: 40cm, 60cm, and 80cm), with a 15cm kick space reserved under the basins to facilitate independent use by young children; the height of stair steps is strictly controlled within 14cm, and the depth of the tread is ≥28cm, with LED sensor light strips embedded in each step to avoid the risk of stepping into empty space caused by alternating light and darkness; even the door handles should be designed in a circular shape with a diameter of 3-4cm, which is convenient for children to grasp and avoids sharp edges.
Renovation Case: Transformation from a Sluggish Commercial Shop to an Internet-Famous Campus
The renovation project of an English training institution located on the third floor of a commercial complex in a certain city is of great reference value. The original space was a 400-square-meter rectangular shop with problems of uneven lighting and dense column grids. The designer achieved a reversal through three key renovation strategies:
Lighting Reconstruction: Some non-load-bearing partition walls were demolished, and high-transparency Low-E glass was used to create a "light well corridor" to introduce natural light into the core area of the space; 12 sets of "skylight simulation lamps" were designed on the top surface, which simulate the light changes from sunrise to sunset through an intelligent control system, and adjust the color temperature according to the course rhythm (5000K white light for morning reading classes, 3000K warm light for story classes).
Functional Reorganization: Breaking the traditional linear layout of "classrooms + corridors", the "central hub + satellite classrooms" structure was adopted — the middle area was designed as an open reading plaza, with 6 themed classrooms (natural science, drama performance, picture book reading, etc.) distributed around it. The flexible changes of the space were realized through folding partitions, increasing the efficiency per square meter by 40%.
Brand Integration: The institution's concept of "immersive English" was transformed into a spatial language. Each classroom corresponds to a national scene (British tea room, American town, African grassland, etc.). Instead of piling up symbols, it conveys cultural characteristics through details such as furniture proportions, material textures, and light and shadow effects, turning language learning from abstract symbols into concrete experiences.
After the renovation, the student renewal rate of the campus increased by 27%, and the parent satisfaction rate reached 96%, proving that excellent space design itself is the best enrollment tool.
Future Trends: The Evolution Direction of Educational Spaces
With the deepening of the "education OMO" model, education and training spaces are evolving into "hubs integrating online and offline". Future renovation designs need to reserve digital interfaces: setting up high-definition recording and broadcasting tracks in teaching areas to facilitate the production of course content; embedding interactive display screens in public areas to realize real-time connection between online students and offline spaces; and even reserving wireless charging modules in the design of desks and chairs to meet the needs of multi-device collaborative learning.
Sustainability will also become a core indicator. Using recyclable regenerated materials (such as polyester fiber sound-absorbing panels made from recycled plastic), designing rainwater recycling systems for green plant irrigation, and installing photovoltaic panels to meet basic lighting electricity needs — these are not only environmental protection practices, but also can become vivid teaching materials for "sustainable development education".
The interior renovation of education and training institutions is essentially a redefinition of educational relationships. When the space transforms from a "teacher-led podium" to a "student-centered growth field", and evolves from a "standardized container" to a "personalized learning ecosystem", the design truly realizes its educational value — not to shape the space, but to shape possibilities.
