That was my ocean at the end of the road. It had been there for as long as I could remember. Its mighty branches had formed a vast canopy. In the summer, when the wind gusted, the poplar would hum like a stormy ocean or coo like rushing waves hissing over the pebbles on the shore. That summer, they cut off all its branches and painted the cuts red. It's for your safety, they said; it's an old tree, the branches could break and kill you. And now it stands there, so safe, so silent, but still alive.
