Initially, it was at the Zhengzhou Shang Dynasty Capital Ruins Museum that we learned how, as early as 3,600 years ago, craftsmen on this land had mastered sophisticated rammed-earth wall construction techniques. Employing the 'banzhu method' (formwork ramming technique), they compacted layer upon layer, with each stratum approximately 8-10 cm thick. Such walls possessed the structural capacity to support gate towers rising several meters in height. Lucky Cup's flagship store's architectural response to locality originates from this discovery...

We were honored to be commissioned to plan and design the flagship store at Lucky Cup Coffee's Central Plains headquarters, a brand with enormous national influence. The core of this design lies in expressing both the cultural identity and the site-specific character of the brand within the architectural space.

Lucky Cup Coffee and our team have continually drawn vitality and unceasing energy from this Central Plains land—a place that still stands upon China's oldest known surface structures, the 3,600-year-old Shang Dynasty rammed-earth city walls. These walls are not only witnesses of time but also spiritual totems. Thus, we chose to use modern concrete to evoke the texture of ancient rammed earth walls, building for Lucky Cup Coffee a structure as solid as a fortress that bears the weight of time and is deeply rooted here.

Constructing this was no small feat: we had to re-engineer the entire building site, re-survey and reinforce foundations. In the end, we used about 260 tons of reinforced concrete to rebuild the roughly 420 m² of interior and exterior space. The heavy concrete walls enclose the space, while wood is introduced on the ceiling and at points of human touch, creating a sense of solidity and warmth. The concrete walls are punctured by windows of varying sizes to bring in sunlight and surrounding greenery; all doors and windows can open fully, allowing seasonal breezes to flow freely between inside and out. Being indoors thus feels much like being in a courtyard. At the center of the bar is the coffee-roasting workshop, whose rich aromas drift through the space on the breeze. This is how we envision Lucky Cup Coffee developing its own cultural depth and spirit here over time.

The Lucky Cup Coffee logo's mascot, “King,” is featured throughout the interior and exterior. For “King,” we extended the cultural concept onto the floor’s black-and-white chessboard pattern, hinting at King’s playful role in daily life. Inside, a massive red-copper relief map of the coffee world adorns the wall, a concrete embodiment of Lucky Cup Coffee’s global reach and spirit of exploration. To recreate the texture of the Shang rammed-earth walls in our concrete, we lined the formwork with inner molds made from strips of wood of varying widths; by adjusting the sand-and-gravel mix, we achieved a warm gray tone. Upon stripping the forms, the concrete surface revealed layered, earthen textures, with unintended pores and slight surface erosion that lend an authentic rustic patina. As time flows, these walls will only grow more resonant with the cultural qualities we have imbued them with.

The concrete building frame addresses three axes: the main entrance, the courtyard, and the headquarters atrium. The front welcomes guests and showcases the brand's culture—a single, tapered column shaped like a coffee cup supports the entryway's weight while symbolizing contemporary coffee culture (everyone holding a cup of coffee). Beyond the entrance, the space extends inward in a rectangular plan, flanked by openings that engage the headquarters atrium and the outdoor courtyard, creating expansive sightlines and allowing air and sunlight to roam freely. This is the vision shared by our team and Lucky Cup Coffee: a natural, relaxed, and fluid coffee workshop. Over time, as nature and memory intertwine, every corner will record the beautiful impressions of passing moments.

Located beside Zhengzhou High-Speed Railway Station, this building's façade will catch every departing and returning passenger's eye. I believe it is destined to become an inseparable part of the city's fabric.
