中国汉族最古老的阴阳五行学说中，泰山位居东方，是太阳升起的地方，也是万物发祥之地，因此泰山神具有主生、主死的重要职能，并由此延伸出几项具体职能：新旧相代，固国安民；延年益寿，长命成仙；福禄官职，贵贱高下；生死之期，鬼魂之统。

碧霞元君:碧霞元君是以中国大陆华北地区为中心的山神信仰，称为'东岳泰山天仙玉女碧霞元君”。

東岳大帝:东岳大帝，又名泰山神，泰山是青帝太昊的司职之一，故青帝又称东帝，为泰山神。

福:福神主职赐“福”。祭祀天官紫薇大帝尧的庙宇在泰山三官庙。

祿:禄神主管官禄，道教将禄神尊为主管功名禄位之神。泰山红门宫飞云阁上即供奉魁星。

壽:寿神主管生老病死。泰山中天门以北有一座庙宇，名为“增福庙

喜:喜神又名吉神，主职送喜、吉祥。旧时泰安城有迎喜神的风俗。

財: 财神的名气是最大的，人们希望招财进宝、财源广进。文财神比干、范蠡。

武财神是赵公明和武圣关羽。在红门进山口左侧就是关帝庙。

缘: 又名月老，主职为有情人指路。在泰山灵应宫月老殿供奉缘神。
