  Kinetic Pneumatic Architecture

  by Tung Chiu On Mono

作品介绍:

My thesis research on the physicality and the materiality of silicone to use as the architectural building module, with the ultimate goal to build a kinetic pneumatic structure, which response to the historical background of inflatable architecture emerged in the 1960s, and investigate the development of controlling the inflatable structure by programming in the innovation and technology societv nowadays. The later part of the thesis will also discuss the further application of silicon to different purposes in architectural project.

In the 1960s, one of the French avant-garde architect groups was established - the Utopie group. The formation of the group had close relationship with the rise/influence of Situationist International (SD after WWII with the idea of anti-capitalist, and with the strand of libertarian Marxism which spread in the Europe. On the other hand, Utopie's works never got built as they were neither compromised by 51 or impractical to build with the choice of material.

In this project, instead of investigate the failure of Utopie group to actualise the plan, I would focus on how to bring their idea of introducing

pneumatic architecture into daily life by using alternative material, silicone, which has a characteristic property of self-healing. Further-more, I would also study the computationalize method to control the inflation in order to alter the silicone form. I would conclude the thesis after implementation of the building structure, firstly, how the modern technology with control of silicon and air can give a new form to architectural building; Secondly, how this type of kinetic pneumatic architecture renew people's experience of perceiving the relation with space.

  香港居民手册

  Hong Kong Inhabitant Manual

  by Ng Ka Man Katherine

作品介绍:

In Hong Kong, living spaces have been alienated as a product in which the ontology of space is linked with luxury and social identity. This thesis explores an alternative solution to living in Hong Kong derived from a pure spatial element that is detached from this dynamic and that reacts with the daily scenarios and situations of everyday life.

The thesis will first deploy simple spatial modules to test inhabitation through various scenarios. Using analysis and working with modernist and contemporary precedents" Barba by MVRDV", the "Nakagin Capsule Tower by Kisho Kurokawa" and "Walking City bl Ron Herron"—small, medium and large scale projects respectively, the thesis first identifies and develops strategies for the liberation of unused space, thus revealing the possibility of adaptive housing. The project explores a delimited neighborhood in Causeway Bay as test site, its social, economic and spatial complexity leading to different narratives of space. Fictional individual inhabitants help to identify spatial requirements.

These characters include a new generation of Hong Kongers who struggle to find spaces for single living and cannot afford traditional flats due to tack of savings or financial support from their family.

Combinations of site and inhabitant create a series of scenarios that lead to the experimental ideas for today's Hong Kong. Rather than limiting architecture to merely technology and style, this thesis explores the experiential dimension of architecture, the measurement of daily life and living culture.

  轻浮的景观编排

  Choreography of the Geobuoyant Landscape

  by Chan Hoi Yan

作品介绍:

Urban and architectural decay in Hong Kong raise questions about the control and utilisation of urban voids and shrunken industries.

When these vast stretches of landscapes are being disregarded, ironically, the government is reclaiming more landfill Sites as they will be saturated in Just a few years. 'There is no magic wand to create land out of nothing in Hong Kong', said Environment Minister. Slow uptake on the increasing despondency towards waste infrastructure, Hong Kong is struggled to digest the uncontrolled growth of waste.

This thesis is a reflection that learns from transformative power of nature and abstracts them as processes of inventions- to embrace decay as a new way of creating ecological landscapes with biodegradable waste and so it becomes a tool instead of a threat. The degradefield and living devices enable us to manipulate decay for bringing back positive impacts to society and to confront the unbearable revulsion; establish dialogues between citizens and derelict material they produced, question the unconsciousness and fundamentally reshape the way we perceive them.

  Inter play

  by Ho Hiu Suen Cheryl

作品介绍:

The thesis explores the design of play spaces that recognize the perspective of children and

allows them to create Individualized spaces within the designed framework. It aims to empower children to become co-creators in the city.

Children are marginalized in an adult-centric society. Playgrounds are spaces designated for children designed according to adults considerations. They delineate an Invisible boundary between children's spaces and the rest of the environment. This is largely based on society's opinion that children are less capable as creators of their space. This has also undermined the differences between a child's and an adult's understanding of and interactions with their environments.

The thesis proposes a series of play spaces in a Sham Shul PO, a highly urbanized district. They engage children to construct their spaces whileaccommodating adults and elderly in the neighbourhood. It seeks to challenge the boundaries and tensions between the territories of child and adult.

  重建城市荒原:空置学校的转型

Rebuilding City Wasteland: A Transformation of Vacant School

  by Tse To Ming Jeff

作品介绍:

"We are living in an age of obsolescence." -Abramson, Daniel M.

Architecture has no difference from other artificial products, it just lasts longer. When time comes, it will collapse. Every product has its

Own purpose and expiry date. Architect designs building with a given program. A residential building is designed "residentially" and expected to last forever.

Traditionally, time or time frame is neglected in architecture design. Architect doesn't design what will happen after 100 years or what happen if the building stops operating after 20 years. Architectural design assumes the building is going to last an eternity with the same program. I think time and multi-program should take an important place in architectural design.

This thesis is going to test this idea through transforming an abandoned school building In Hong Kong. By taking time and multi-program into the architectural design is aiming to reduce the appear of obsolete buildings.

  第三个城市

  The Third City

  by Yeung Yuen Wing Hurakan

设计说明:

This thesis explores the issues of the future situation and development of the Hong Kong-Shen Zhen borderline after 1st July 2047.

From 1898, a physical and psychological border-line divided a city into Hong Kong and Shenzhen. One of the roles of the boundary is to maintain two distinct territories. They have different political, social, economic and cultural backgrounds.

They have independent future planning and development. The backgrounds and states form their own superiority and encourage them to develop their interdependent cooperation.

Since the political change in 1997, Hong Kong and Shenzhen are under the 'one country, two system'. They started to plan the cities together but still develop individually. The borderline becomes a barrier to obstruct them.

By assuming the 'one country, two system' will be abolished after 2047, They Will be under one system which is combined with their current systems.

This thesis generates an proposal and redefines the functions and roles of the borderline and the border through the fusion before 2047.

  香港:超自然 - 自然就是建筑

Hong Kong: Hypernature - Nature is Architecture

  by Yao Zong Xi Hugh

设计说明:

"China is known for its monumental building projects but perhaps the most ambitious of all is under way in Shaanxi province, where 700

mountains are being flattened in order to generate more buildable land. The astonishing plan transfers untold volumes of earth into a joining valleys, thus creating 155 square miles of flat space upon which a new super-city will be constructed."

Gregory Baskin, June 8, 2014, Guardian There is no more nature, we have only hyper nature, a quasi-religion.

Nowadays, the nature is problematic to simply define it as an artifact or consumable product. This thesis questions architecture's positioning of the relation between man and nature in city: from nature as an object condition to place as culture and identity. It considers these relationships in the context of contemporary Hong Kong, a City where financial and property oriented has continuous land consumption, constructed and deconstructed. The thesis focuses on exploring the anonymous plants in the decaying areas, its situated spatial patterns, interrelation with human, and architecture host, the wall.

Finally, based on the hypothetical scenario of maximized land use of Hon Kong, this thesis asks how architecture can be a device to create a next nature that is a re-imagining of the culture and environment of Hong Kong. The demolished Kowloon Walled City is selected for instrumentalizing architecture to reinterpret nature of Hong Kong.

  Airpark: Airport as Inhabited Parkscape

  by Chung Kit Kwan Kate

设计说明:

The thesis questions the current trend of perpetual expansion of the airport core footprint as an environmentally sustainable model. Airport

should not be "too big (nor) too small", and that their performance depends on their "elasticity", rather than their "size".

It aims to reconcile the future travelling infra- structure and its environmental impact. This thesis speculates on the alternative use of the 3rd runway reclaimed site into an inhabitable landscape.

The HKIA has been undergoing perpetual expansion barely 3 years into service. Starting with the construction of Terminal 2 in 2001 ; followed by North Satellite Concourse and Skypier completed in 2010; land reclamation for the addition of 3rd Runwav kicked off in 2016. How long would it take before the need of the 4th Runway arises?

The thesis challenges the necessity of having the 3rd runway, and to a more radical extent, perhaps the 2nd runway would not be needed with the raise of China International air traffic along with alternative transportation such as the XRL and HMZB.

The airport of the future should not go big, but go elastic: the airport core shall maintain its current footprint, and tap into the engineering efficiency of HZMB and XRL network. Since the 3rd runway reclamation is already underway, the thesis takes the opportunity to propose alternative use of the Site for accommodating speculated resilience of the air flight market.

[W] Community Catalyst Evolution for the Next Century

  by Wong Chi Chung Gary

设计说明:

Public toilet has always been regarded as only a necessary element in the design of public area. They are classified as somewhere dirty or even associated with delinquency by the public. Nevertheless, public toilet not only plays an important role to our communities in Hong Kong, but also has its own historical values. It represents the development of democracy and civilization of Hong Kong and allows people to get out of the house, stay out longer and experience better amenity support in the public space.

However, the design of public toilet has become too standard and lack of engaging relationship with the community context. Therefore, this thesis review the role of a public toilet in the typical communities in Hong Kong in order to rethink the design of public toilet as a sustainable prefabricated system, which focuses only sites underneath the flyover and its surrounding residue space in order to explore thepossibility of the public toilet to be a catalyst for the community activities and events.

  从标准化到适应性生活重新定义1980年代的中国住宅综合体

From Standard Block to Adaptive Living Re-defining the 1980's Chinese Residential Compound

  by Wang Yaai Iris

设计说明:

During the year of 1950 to 1 980, China had provided a huge number of standard residential compounds as national welfare, which have been still occupied more than 60% of citizens currently. This China's 1980's mass-produced urban residential fabrics has become obsolete due to the drastic changes in the Chinese social structure and fast urbanization. The thesis is aimed to reform the existing urban fabrics in response to the social transformation, including population composition, the use of public space and infrastructures, and the need of interaction among all groups of citizens. By taking the up-coming aging shifts as an opportunity, this thesis will propose a new urban structure that allows

for changes, adaptability and customization so that the monotonous urban fabrics can be redefined to be a social sustainable community.

  铁路小径 - “少有人走的路”

  Rail-trail-"The Road Less Travelled"

  by MA CHANG LING

设计说明:

The thesis explores the possibility of providing high-speed connection in rural area of China while maintaining its attachment to the local settlements. It is proposing an alternative or an intermediate between the dichotomy of open and closed road systems in order to open up the high-speed network from the enclosed condition. It attempts to challenge the current mismatch of interest between the state policy and the local life when it comes to the construction of transportation infrastructure in modern China. The transportation network of China has expanded unprecedentedly since the 20th century, exceeding 4.24 million km of roads and 1 21 ,OOO km of ran in 2013, only second to the United States. The country's 2030 Road Master Plan is anticipating 5.8 million km of total road net-work including 400,000km of national highways, 180,000km of expressways and 274,000 km of railway. Yet, the higher speed road networks including the express highways and railways in China are mainly connecting the major cities, but not aiming at replacing the old but still busy rural roads. Roads connecting Tibet and Han-Chinese in Yunnan are particularly looked into in this thesis. Due to the complex geographical conditions, they are always built for strategic purpose trading In the past, military in the last century, economical and tourism in the latest. The purpose has been increasingly shifted towards aligning state policy in economic development and homogenization, hence minimizing the role of the newly-built roads in terms of connecting local communities, which is of a huge variety in ethnicity hence the way of living, ang facilitating their dally chores. The thesis aims at mediating this condition by interplaying the open and the enclosed road systems, through considering the means of entry into the enclosed system, and connections between multiple road systems as logistic redistribution depots for users of a range of speeds, envisages a share of rural life within the high-speed network.

  by Ha Wing Hay Lilian

设计说明:

This thesis explores an architectural system that seeks to reposition wet markets in Hong Kong as a platform to promote leisure farming an farm-to-table in a high density city, making local and fresh vegetables directly accessible to the local community. In recent years, people have become more conscious about the food they eat and have higher demands towards leading a healthy lifestyle. Wet markets are known for offering fresher produce. To shorten the transportation distance and to allow people to learn more about the food they eat, farming can be introduced into wet markets. Since optimal farming is specific to factors such as light and water, which can vary at different times of the year and for different species of plant, flexible Interventions and combinations of program are used in this thesis to adapt the farming system to overcome these constraints, while transforming the farming spaces into welcoming public spaces for the community. The system aims to form a community that supports local vegetable production and alleviate Hong Kong's dependency on imported vegetables.

  Themed Cine-Ty

  by Ho Yuen Hin Sonia

设计说明:

'Theme Parks' offers the qualities of a virtual world inside a real world in its own sealed-off hermetic envelope, they are 'vaults" that aim to disconnect users with reality. Carefully designed circulations, colouration, forced perspective are important elements applied to such 'themed

parks' to let the users to enjoy a desired atmosphere and to temporarily blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, reality and drama..

The cinema is as secure as a palace, and its filmic representations are locked within a vault. Inside the cinema is firmly placed a representation of reality, it houses another world which is separate and distinct from the one outside its confines. This thesis aims to explore the notion of hyper reality and to design a 'cinema-city' that would work to keep reality and fiction separate in one of the busiest districts in Hong Kong, as well as aiming to provide a combination of multimedia installations that seeks to immerse visitors into a multisensory environment. The more the cinema, architecture can portray itself as a room the more it can make itself separate and distinct from the streetscape and reality outside.

Breathing Architecture: Aerodynamic in Concrete Jungle

  by Chan Pak Kwan

With the drop of 2/3 wind speed, 10 time more serious of pollution, 5 degree celsius higher than rural area, citizen suffered from heat stress, high energy consumption, pulmonary disease, significantly reduced our living quality.

Architects and Government have growing concern on mediating urban heat island problem with stronger ventilation approach, from earlies day public housing natural ventilation system, budding form subtraction, to nowaday more systematic approach like extra GFA inducements for building setback, air breezeway for cross ventilation and implementation of urban climatic map, air ventilation assignment result on urban planning. Can generic ventilation ideology incorporate with building design spontaneously?

Thesis begins from compilation of wind based precedent and ventilation induction methodology, then process to subdivided analysis on each wind collection phenomenon, lastly create hybrid system to form new building prototype. With the assist of computational fluid dynamics to study

aerodynamic between ventilation and building form precisely, my thesis aims to explore new high-rise prototype that can maximize natural air flow for both exterior pedestrian and interior end user.

  by Chen Lingdi

设计说明:

This thesis aims to explore the meaning of "fruit urbanism" and rethink the relationship between human, city and fruits. Yau Ma Tei Wholesale

Fruit Market plays a core role in the fruit industry of Hong Kong. However, in the recently years, It suffers multiple crises. The economy of market has taken a serious knock by supermarket. The environmental issue has a negative impact on neighborhoods and considering the high land price, the government start to re-plan the land use of this place. Thus, the regeneration of YMT fruit market is an urgent target. What fruit urbanism brings to the city is that people more care about the whole process from growing the fruits to the waste treatment, therefore, the fruit market in the future is not only for food exchange but also a place where has the social exchange and knowledge exchange. That is the new value of Fruit Market.

  受音乐影响的建筑

  Architecture Informed by Music

  by Zhu Shenhan

设计说明:

The thesis investigates correlations between architecture and music in order to develop a design methodology informed by music. This approach provides an alternative way to think compositional languages into spatial organizations. My interest lies in the underlying and connections that make it possible for music to stimulate architectural strategy, for example, how a melody informs a spatial movement, or how the textures of different instruments come together to inspire an architectural scenario where spaces have a dialogue with each other. I specifically look at atonal music, which challenges traditional perceptions about composition by intentionally breaking up the harmony. To achieve that, composers set up unique rules to avoid a sense of tonic centrality and thus create fragmented musical quality. I intend to bring that quality to architecture through a collective performance of the structure, volume, circulation, light, the way people interact, and etc.

  野生城市:香港岛

  Feral City: Hong Kong Island

  by Yuen Alexander Tin Lap

设计说明:

My thesis questions the possibility of cohabitation between humans and wildlife in the city. Takin hold of Hong Kong Island, a topographically lush landscape with urban development surrounding its coastline, the island would become a Feral City.

A vision hypothesizing how animals native to the island would behave in the city environment of the future. Heavily inspired by Érnest Callenbach's writing on Ecotopia. A world where humans have an alternative relationship with nature by take care of the planet, rather than overexploiting it. Feral City would be animalizing urban habitats aspiring for a change in attitude on how nature and its wildlife should be perceived.

In the 21st century, cities have shifted from places of production to places for living. Believing that cities will need to expand in order to sustain the growing human population. Issues of climate change stemming from anthropogenic activates such as habitat loss and pollution will inevitably worsen and diminish. Ultimately forcing wildlife to either go extinct or move into the city, creating conflicts between human and animals in the same territory. Rather than seeing a humans and the city as detach entities unrelated to nature and its wildlife. When faced with current rise of rapid urbanization and habitat loss, the urgent question of how should or how could cities be made livable for both humans and wildlife arises.

Having brought a disastrous chain of anthropogenic problems upon ourselves because of our insatiable appetite to domesticate nature. As seen continually throughout the discourse of architecture and undeniably demonstrated by the very existence of zoos. An Invented architectural typology that controls nature and domesticates wildlife for the amusement of humans. Considering that wildlife gauges and to an extent serves as an indicator that accesses the quality of environment around us. Feral city is a meta urban regime made friendly for both humans and wildlife that reimagines an untapped, provocative potential for cities to evolve into.

这个方案很有意思哟,把香港岛做成了一个巨大的动物园。哈哈!!

  People's Parking Future Inter-structure Clusters

  by Pang Tsun Man Emerich

设计说明:

This thesis explores the capacity of turning unused/underused public parking spaces in Hong Kong Central District into social spaces that cater the spatial needs of the over-crowded city. The research reviews the relationship between pedestrians and cars when car culture is becoming obsolete, how one influences the mobility of the other and thus the activities that can be generated from such changes.

Traffic problems and insufficient road space in Central has led our administrators to take actions to cut down the number of private cars (PCs) in the future. It creates a moment when the carparks are not in use, and eventually opens up for other functions such as event spaces for even I make a projection in 30 years when the number of PCs drops from 71.8% to 10% and see how this change would re-shape the pedestrians-cars relationship and networks. Through site documentations and analyses, 15 public carparks will be examined and transformed in four categorized zones (based on the existing activities and conditions) as a response to the new net-works and spatial needs. The inherent carpark qualities and activities of different users will contribute to my final proposal of social clusters with various activities and functions.

  Vertical Heterarchy

  by Yeung Chau Chuen Tim

设计说明:

If the horizontality of public arounds has to be re-considered to cope with the forces of capital and development, a dialogue opens up that makes it possible to re-interpret the potential of architecture in the vertical dimension with a public-dimension.

In response to the development of underground space proposed by Hong Kong Government in prominent public spaces, this thesis explores the alternative possibility of developing public space vertically above ground. Victoria Park, as the site, is not merely served for recreational purpose through history. The intricacy of Victoria Park is unfolded into multiple dimensions of leisure landscape, recreational facilities, occasional grounds and political tension. The studyfocuses on how to embed and amplify these original qualities vertically.

By proposing a typology for vertical public space to question the hierarchical arrangement of typical tower, the thesis seeks to reinvent the heterarchy of space in architectural performance, so as to provide different perspectives of interpreting the public-dimension of Victoria Park.

WaterLand — Rural Infrascape of Water "Hilly Area", Southern China

  by Wang Yusi

设计说明:

This thesis explores the possibility of development without urbanization. Through extensive observation, documentation and analytical drawings, it argues for landscape and water system purification, land and crops to act as catalysts for preparing the site/territory prior to any consideration of construction. A village with around 2000 villagers in the hilly area of Zhejiang province is chosen as an exemplar for this research.

The conflicts between nature and economic growth in China has become increasingly prominent in the last forty years. The Chinese extensive development model which relies on expansion of the quantity of investment including labour and resources, has caused serious domestic and regional environmental crises such as sandstorms, smog and water pollution.

Since the last decade, the Chinese government has raised concern to deal with sit effects of this extensive growth; however, relatively little has been achieved, especially for the rural( land- scape which according to China National Radio (2016) covers almost 70% of Chinese land.

The project will be a development plan with several phases for the chosen village along local reservoir-based irrigation networks, which have been polluted mainly due to agricultural waste such as sediment, nutrient and pesticides.

"Ministry of Land and Resources: the national agricultural land area is 9.682 billion mu." China National Radio, (2016).
